Staples from Scratch: Not-Too-Sweet French Vanilla Coffee Creamer

I absolutely adore my morning cup of coffee. Sometimes I start looking forward to it the night before. I usually just drink one cup a day and only in the morning. But I sure do enjoy it. Sometimes when I stay at someone else’s house and they are not coffee drinkers, I worry about where I’m going to get my coffee. That’s probably a sign of A Problem. Let’s just say I really love my morning coffee–the smell, the taste, the warm cup–all of it.

I’m pretty picky about the coffee I drink at home. I think coffee should be hot, not iced, even during the summer. I prefer strong coffee. I prefer to drink it out of a white mug. Why? I don’t know.

Normally drink my coffee with milk but not sugar. Every once in a while I like a flavored coffee, but these days I find most of them to be too sweet for my taste. Which is a strange thing really. I can remember I time when “too sweet” was not a concept I could understand. That’s the great thing about making your own foods–you can make them just right for your taste buds.

This is something we can make that doesn’t require any cooking. Perfect. This is pretty much the easiest thing in the world to make. I basically followed this recipe, but wanted to make a version that wasn’t as sweet. With equal amounts of sweetened condensed milk and regular milk, this recipe is going to make a very sweet coffee creamer. Which is great if that’s what you like; I just prefer something a little less sugary. To find the right level of sweetness, I simply added the sweetened condensed milk to the milk until I found a taste that I liked.  Here are the quantities I ended up using:

  • 1 1/2 cups (14 ounces) non-fat milk (or low-fat or whole or half-and-half or whatever you want)
  • 3 tablespoons sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Pour your ingredients into a mason and jar and shake. That’s it.

Would I make this again? Yes. It’s incredibly easy and pretty cheap too.
