Pumpkin Week: Pumpkin Doughnuts

Back by popular demand*, it’s pumpkin week!

My family has asked me to stop making things out of pumpkin. They ask me, “Why? Why, all the pumpkin?” Me: “Um, because it’s October.”

In October, we make things out of pumpkin because it’s fall, and we are embracing the season. Because it’s 90 degrees, and I am wearing a tank top and it sure doesn’t look or feel like fall. But pumpkin is supposed to make us believe we live in a place that has seasons, and the leaves are changing colors, the air is crisp, and we’re enjoying the bounty of the season. Because I’m trying to force our mouths into some Norman Rockwell, J. Crew catalog-induced version of autumnal bliss. So, this week, I’ll share some of the pumpkin things I made, because I probably won’t be allowed to make anything with pumpkin again for a long, long time.

First up, pumpkin doughnuts! Believe it or not, I’ve never made doughnuts before, except for lumpy little beignets. I bought a doughnut pan. These were not bad. Everyone enjoyed them except for the three year-old, but he’s suspicious of most things that are new. For the record, the kids insisted on the sprinkles. I hate sprinkles. Does anyone over the age of 10 actually enjoy them? If you make these, and you are not a child, I would leave off the sprinkles. If you don’t have a doughnut pan, you can apparently also make this in loaf form. Would probably be good too and also easier.

* By “popular demand” I don’t mean to imply that anyone has actually asked for Pumpkin Week. It was more like the voices in my head saying, “Let’s make lots of pumpkin-flavored things and feed it to the family over the course of several weeks! But we’ll shrink it down and call it Pumpkin Week!”

  1. I wish I were there for pumpkin week! I love all things pumpkin, plus I miss all of you!

  2. Mmmm pumpkin week!!!

  3. I will bookmark this post for when my family starts whining about pumpkins. You phrased it more eloquently than “BECAUSE IT’S TEXAS AND MOMMY NEEDS THIS.”
